The incredible Great Hornbill is slowly coming to life on my page. 🖌️ Their vibrant casque and striking beak make them one of the most iconic birds of the forest canopy and an absolute joy (and challenge!) to capture in detail.

This piece is still in progress, but I couldn’t resist sharing the bold splash of colour already taking shape. Hornbills are not only magnificent, but also play a vital role in their ecosystems as seed dispersers, true gardeners of the forest. 🌳💛

The first washes are down, and this striking crown is already stealing the show! I’m building up the layers slowly, letting the pigments settle into their own textures before moving on. It always amazes me how a piece starts to come alive with just an eye and a splash of colour.

More detail, more patience, and a lot of tiny brushstrokes still to come… but I’m enjoying every second of watching this bird emerge from the paper. 🖌️

Sometimes the art just… doesn’t want to cooperate.

Yesterday, after a long and stressful morning, I sat down to work on my Knysna Turacos — and it just wasn’t happening. My head wasn’t in the right space, my hands weren’t listening, and the result was… well… a bit of a mess.

Luckily, one of the joys of working with these pigments is that I can lift the ink and try again. Today is a new day, and these Turacos aren’t done with me yet. 🖌️💚

I don't often adventure into the world of flora and today I remembered why... I really struggle to keep my momentum and enthusiasm through repetition and most flowers require intricate repetition within each petal 😵‍💫

I don't like to force the creative flow so finishing becomes challenging.

We are almost there though...
